This assay helps to identify the cause of anaemia & iron deficiency which is the commonest cause of anaemia in India. Low iron values indicate deficient erythropoiesis which is corroborated by serum ferritin levels reflecting body iron stores. In certain cases, disorders of haemoglobin synthesis may lead to anaemia requiring blood transfusions.

Fungal infections are more common in immunocompromised patients. The direct examination provides an immediate early presumptive diagnosis and initiation of antifungal therapy.
